Caryophyllaceae in North America: change over the last 110 years.

THE Caryophyllaceae treatment in the Flora of North America (FNA) series was published in 2005, the first such compilation covering the entirety of North America north of Mexico since a volume of Gray's Synoptical Flora of North America appeared in 1895. We thought this provided an interesting opportunity to investigate the similarities and differences between them. Allowing for some changes in rank and extrapolating what Robinson would have included in the Paronychioideae (as Illecebraceae), about 60% of the taxa in the FNA treatment were included by Robinson. The increase in number of species and total taxa are 55 and 69 percent respectively. Fifty-three species and one genus native to North America have been described since 1895, many of these from western and northern areas of the continent. Almost two-thirds of the new finds are in four genera: Minuartia (11), Silene (10), Cerastium (7), and Paronychia (6). Thirty-nine alien species are not included in Robinson; a few, such as Cerastium pumilum and Silene cserei have become widespread. Of the alien species included by Robinson, several have become far more widespread (Gypsophila paniculata, Holosteum umbellatum) and at least two have become far more scarce (Agrostemma githago, Vaccaria hispanica).
