Flora of North America: Synergy with other Botanical Projects Hartman, Ronald L. [1], Nelson, Burrell E. [1]. Floristic Inventory of the Rocky Mountains, an overview. DURING the past 28 years, the students and staff of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM, USFS) have conducted 44 intensive floristic inventories in the region. Most areas, 1,300 (extremely mountainous) to 9,000 (plains and basins) mi2 each, have been in Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico (also AZ, ID, NE, OR, SD, UT, and WA). Thirty students have received MS degrees with 6 currently in the program. Over 530,000 numbered collections have been obtained (30 percent by the authors). Emphasis has been on documenting species of conservation concern and invasives, but the vast majority of specimens voucher vascular plant diversity and species distributions. For example, the 19 projects completed during the 1990s (CO, ID, UT, WA, and WY) resulted in the inventory of 79,391 mi2 of mostly state and federal lands and in 180,342 numbered specimens. Most importantly, 414 different sensitive taxa were encountered at 1,459 sites; most occurrences previously were undocumented. In Wyoming alone, more than 90 taxa consequently were removed from the sensitive plant list (Wyoming Natural Diversity Database). Graduate students begin the spring preceding the first academic year and spend two full summers in the field. By the end of the second academic year identifications are complete and the final report has been submitted to the federal funding agency. Typically an additional 3 to 6 months is required for the writing of the thesis. Associated data are stored in a Microsoft Access database (650,000 specimen records). The Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Wyoming soon will be replaced by a on-line, dynamic atlas and database for the southern Rockies. This is funded by NSF to a consortium of Front Range institutions (COLO, CS, GREE, RM). These specimens and distributional data are available for authors of Flora of North America and various other types of research.
