Human Transformation of California: Botany, History, and Sociology Vallee, Lillian [1]. Cuttings, Curricula & Blue Goose Gumbo: Reassembling the Materials of a Central Valley Identity on the San Joaquin Plain. WHILE it is true that California's Great Central Valley is one of the most dramatically altered landscapes on the planet, there are valiant efforts underway to revive natural systems through restoration, education and art. Using twelve years of volunteer, hands-on experience with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service staff and Modesto Junior College faculty and students as a base for her observations, the author will illustrate Robert Thayer's thought that bioregional, or life-place, culture "requires the joining of many hands"--student hands raised in question...clasped hands around shovels...hands shaking in agreement...hands patting people on the back...hands raised in celebration."
