Systematics Section / ASPT Mcneal, Dale [1], Mora, Edith [1]. Geographic distribution of chromosome races in Brodiaea elegans Hoover (Themidaceae). POLYPLOIDY ie of particular interest in plants as it usually results in reproductive isolation which can lead to speciation. Brodiaea elegans Hoover (Themidaceae) is an extreme example of polyploidy in a species that shows little morphologic variation across several different polyploid races. Prior to our investigation diploid chromosome numbers of 12, 16, 24, 32, and 40 were reported in the literature (Johansen, 1932; Burbanck, 1942; Niehaus, 1968). Neihaus reported numbers of 16 and 32 were common in California with 12 and 24 being found in a single population near Sonora, Tuolomne Co. CA. He reported that 2N=40 populations were found only in Oregon. He considered that these populations belonged to Brodiaea elegans, but recognized these populations as ssp. hooveri based on several quantitative differences and a difference in shape and position of the staminodes. Our investigation has revealed that 2N=40 populations are commen in the central foothills of the Sierra Nevada, CA. Further two, previously unknown chromosomal races, 2N=42 and 48 were discovered.
