Geographic Structure of Fungal-Algal Partnerships in a Widespread Lichen of Western North America. LITTLE is known about the geographic structure of mutualistic symbiotic partners. Letharia vulpina ‘lupina’ is a mostly asexually reproducing lichenized fungus with at least three distinct lineages of algal partners, all of which have narrower geographic ranges than that of the fungus. Based on Internal Transcribed Spacer DNA sequences for both partners, it appears that most partnership combinations are unique. Among the few partnership combinations found with any frequency, most are made up of fungal and algal lineages that are 1) common, 2) geographically widespread, and 3) have low partnership specificity. High diversity of both fungal and algal haplotypes in British Columbia as compared with California suggests effective dual fungal-algal post-Pleistocene dispersal into Canada or the existence of a northern refugium.
