Tropical Biology Section Hayden, W. John [1]. The Flora of Kaxil Kiuic, Yucatán, Mexico. LOCATED in the Puuc Hills region of the southern part of the state of Yucatán, Mexico, the Helen Moyers Biocultural Reserve (Kaxil Kiuic) consists of 4,000 acres of medium subdeciduous forest (selva mediana subcaducifolia). The flora of Kaxil Kiuic has been under active study since 2000, during which time a total of 14 collecting trips have yielded documentation of the flora in the form of 700+ herbarium specimens and several thousand digital photographs. To date, the floristic inventory for the reserve consists of 425 species of vascular plants. Some of the most diverse families include legumes, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Rubiaceae, Malvaceae s.l., and Apocynaceae s.l. The plant inventory and flora web site along with newly completed infrastructure (buildings) will facilitate use of the reserve for teaching and research projects in diverse subject areas (anthropology, archeology, biology, botany, ecology, environmental studies), making Kaxil Kiuic truly a meeting place in the forest.
