Systematics Section / ASPT Carlsward, Barbara [1], Manchester, Steven R. [2], Judd, W. S. [1]. Angiosperm AToL Stamen and Pollen Morphology: Preliminary Observations. FEATURES derived from stamen and pollen morphology are being examined from 370 species across angiosperms, focusing on twelve problematic nodes (“the dirty dozen”) of the angiosperm phylogeny as currently understood: basal angiosperms, basal eudicots, core eudicots, Saxifragales, Caryophyllales, basal rosids, basal fabids, Malpighiales, Ericales, basal lamiids, Lamiales, and campanulids. In addition to stamen and pollen characters, many other reproductive as well as vegetative morphological features are being recorded directly from herbarium or other vouchered plant material. Using a multigene framework built through the efforts of the AToL working group, these morphological features will help determine synapomorphies for currently undiagnosable clades and may help resolve some of the more problematic nodes within the dirty dozen of angiosperms. As they are gathered, morphological metadata are being entered into an online morphological database (Tree of Life Knowledge and Information Network, TOLKIN) along with light and scanning electron microscope images. Ultimately, we hope to provide an easily accessible online framework that can be built upon by future researchers. Log in to add this item to your schedule
