Monophyly and Phylogenetic Relationships in Lymania (Bromeliaceae: Bromelioideae) Based on Morphology and Chloroplast DNA Sequences. THE genus Lymania consists of eight species, each of which is endemic to southern Bahia state in Brazil. The genus is closely allied to members of Aechmea subgenus Lamprococcus, Araeococcus, and Ronnbergia, and both its monophyly and the relationships among species are unclear. Bayesian and parsimony analyses of Lymania and related species were conducted using data from 61 morphological characters and sequences from three chloroplast DNA regions (matK, trnL- trnF, and psbA- trnH). Analysis of molecular data alone resulted in relatively poor resolution and low bootstrap and posterior probability values. The morphological and combined data sets provided greater resolution and support, and yielded a monophyletic Lymania that was sister to Ae. subgenus Lamprococcus. Two well-supported clades within Lymania are evident, a sulcate, furrowed ovary group and a winged, ribbed ovary group. Although a monophyletic Lymania was recovered in the analyses, the clade is supported only by characters exhibiting some degree of homoplasy, and no single character unambiguously unites the members of the genus. Additionally, the morphological distinctiveness coupled with low molecular divergence indicates relatively recent and rapid speciation within Lymania.
