Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Pokorny, Lisa [1], Shaw, A.J. [1]. A molecular analysis of reproductive isolation in sympatric populations of the Sphagnum subsecundum complex. SPECIES in the Sphagnum subsecundum complex are notoriously difficult to distinquish and different authors recognize anywhere from one to nine species in the group. Nucleotide sequences from five loci (three nuclear, two chloroplast) were obtained from sympatric individuals belonging to different species in the complex in order to assess reproductive isolation at sites where the species are intimately intermixed. Nucleotide sequences were obtained from 116 individuals. Morphologically defined species are for the most part genetically isolated, although the molecular data provide evidence of some interbreeding and also migration among populations.
