Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Bungartz, Frank [1], Aptroot, André [2]. The Lichen Flora of the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. THE Galápagos Archipelago is a small group of volcanic islands of oceanic origin. It is located on the equator ca. 1000 km off the coast of South America. The islands, located within the Pacific Dry Zone, have an unusually arid climate for the tropics. Several islands reach altitudes of more than 800 m. Higher islands support different vegetation zones: a coastal zone, an arid zone, a transition zone, and moist uplands. As a consequence, the archipelago supports an unusually diverse lichen flora despite its strong isolation. No recent inventory of this flora has been undertaken since Weber published a checklist with196 species in the 1980s. Updates of this lists so far have been the result of name changes and a few additional identifications of material originally collected by Weber. In fall of 2005 the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) therefore initiated a new survey of the islands. So far more than 4000 specimens have been collected and deposited at CDRS. Identification of this material is ongoing, but it is evident that more than 300 species will be added to Weber’s original list. The majority of new records are additions to the flora of Ecuador, several records are new to South America and some species will be described as new to science.
