Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Harpel, Judith A. [1], Cherdantseva, V. Ya. [2], Gorobets, K. V. [2]. The Distribution of Bryophytes on Sakhalin Island, Russian Far East. BRYOPHYTES were collected on Sakhalin Island during the summers of 2001 and 2003 as part of the International Sakhalin Island Project (ISIP). The ISIP study was an NSF funded biodiversity survey of the island involving the international collaboration of Russian, Japanese and American botanists. Sakhalin Island is located along mainland Russia (Khabarovsk Krai), 40 km north of Hokkaido, Japan. It is 948 km long, and ranges from 26 to 160 km wide. With a total area of 76,400 sq. km, it represents Russia’s largest island. Its diverse topography, and maritime climate, provides a large number of interesting microhabitats for bryophytes. Many of the bryophyte species found on Sakhalin also occur in the Pacific Northwest and in eastern North America. Among the species representing new records for Sakhalin Island include: Schistostega pennata, Ptilidium californicum, Frullania bolanderi and Nardia assamica.
