The cleistogamous breeding system: a review of its frequency, evolution and ecology in angiosperms.

THE evolution of the cleistogamous breeding system has received increasing attention in the scientific literature over the past 25 years since the publication of the last major review. Defined as the production of permanently closed, self-pollinated flowers, cleistogamy is a complex, sexual breeding system that can take many forms in angiosperms. To determine the occurrence and evolution of the cleistogamous breeding system in angiosperms, a literature survey was conducted using online journal databases and library resources. Plant species were included in this survey only if a detailed floral description or empirical data accompanied mention of cleistogamy. The results of our survey revealed that cleistogamy is found in at least 691 angiosperm species, distributed over 229 genera and 50 families. When mapped onto a comprehensive phylogeny of the angiosperms, cleistogamy has evolved at least 35 times at the family level. In addition, nearly all species could be placed into three general categories of cleistogamous flower production (dimorphic, induced, or complete) reflecting ecological and genetic influences. We encourage future researchers to utilize these categories of cleistogamy in an effort to clarify the ecological mechanisms leading to the induction of cleistogamous flower production. Future studies will likely contribute to the robustness of this data set and reveal which selective pressures are responsible for the evolution of this breeding system and its maintenance in angiosperm lineages.
