The Vegetative Anatomy of the Haemodoraceae and its Systematic Significance.

THE Haemodoraceae are a relatively small monocot family consisting of 14 genera and approximately 100 species and are distributed throughout Australia, southern Africa, South & Central America, and eastern N. America. The family is divided into two sub-families: Haemodoroideae and Conostylidoideae. My research focuses on the vegetative anatomy of the family with an emphasis on leaf anatomical features. The overall goals of my project are: 1) to acquire new data for the Haemodoraceae; 2) to reanalyze previously acquired (published and unpublished) data for the family; and 3) to perform a cladistic analysis using all these data. Through my work on detailed anatomical descriptions, I have found several phylogenetically informative traits pertaining to leaf anatomy, including: epidermal cell wall thickness, fiber presence/ distribution in the vascular bundle, tannin cell presence, leaves fistulous, epidermal invaginations, mucilage cell presence, bulliform cell presence, marginal fiber cap presence, and palisade cell morphology. These date have contributed to a revised phylogenetic analysis of the family, combining molecular and morphological data. The genera Blancoa and Conostylis of the sub-family Conostylidoideae share thickened epidermal cells walls, an anatomical apomorphy, which supports findings from previous molecular data that they are sister taxa. I have only observed tannin cells present in the leaves of members of the sub-family Conostylidoideae, a well-established monphyletic group. Finally, the two genera Wachendorfia and Schiekia share bulliform epidermal cells, which corroborates with other apomorphies that place them as sister taxa. Observations of root and stem anatomy may detect other phylogenetically informative characters.
