The Evolution of Ericales: Recent Insights using both Morphology and Molecules Gillespie, Emily [1], Bush, Catherine [1], Kron, Kathleen A. [1]. Phylogeny of Ericoideae (Ericaceae) based on multiple nuclear and chloroplast genes. THE Ericoideae are one of several subfamilies that comprise the Ericaceae. Four groups are apparent within the Ericoideae and are generally recognized at the rank of tribe. These traditionally include Empetreae (Empetrum and Ceratiola), Rhodoreae (Rhododendron, Menziesia and Therorhodion), Ericeae (Erica, Calluna and Daboecia) and Phyllodoceae (Phyllodoce, Kalmiopsis, Epigaea, Rhodothamnus, Elliottia, Kalmia and Bejaria). Bejaria is sometimes considered to be a fifth tribe, the Bejareae. The Ericoideae are diverse with regard to several aspects of flower morphology (e.g. petal number, petal connation), leaf type (ericoid versus flat) and pollination strategy. Although in recent studies the monophyly of Ericoideae is well-supported, and although some subclades are also well-supported, relationships among tribes within the subfamily are not fully understood. This study used several nuclear and chloroplast genes to resolve relationships among the major ericoid tribes, including ndhF, nrITS, matK, waxy (GBSS-1), trnS-G spacer, rpb2 and LEAFY. Separate maximum parsimony analyses of chloroplast and nuclear data each generally support the monophyly of Rhodoreae, Ericeae, Empetreae, Bejaria, Kalmia, and a clade comprised of several Phyllodoceae. Combined analysis of nuclear and chloroplast data support the monophyly of Rhodoreae, Empetreae, Ericeae, Bejaria, Kalmia and a clade comprised of Kalmiopsis and Phyllodoce. Rhodoreae, Phyllodoceae and a clade comprised of Bejaria and Empetreae are weakly supported. In summary, several well-supported and/or consistent clades are apparent within Ericoideae, but based on multiple chloroplast and nuclear genes and maximum parsimony analysis, the current phylogeny lacks strong support among major clades.
