Teaching Section Mickle, James [1], Ferzli, Miriam [2], Carter, Michael [3], Wiebe, Eric [4], Aune, Patricia [2]. LabWrite as a Teaching Tool for Improving Lab Reports. LABWRITE is a free, on-line (http://labwrite.ncsu.edu) tutorial that provides in-depth, student-centered guidance in writing lab reports. Funded by NSF, LabWrite is based on the premise that the lab report can play a crucial role in developing students’ understanding of key scientific concepts and in strengthening their communication and critical thinking skills. This poster is a presentation of the key elements of the LabWrite process: PreLab, InLab, PostLab, and LabCheck. This process has been shown to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of the science of labs. The Instructor and Professor pages associated with LabWrite help instructors to optimize student use of LabWrite and provide grading rubrics. LabWrite has been implemented in various science courses in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and engineering. Recently it has been used at NCSU in BO 200, Plant Life, to enhance writing of lab reports on photosynthesis and plant growth. Students report paying more attention to lab, greater reflection on the lab experience, and enhanced learning of the scientific concepts covered during lab than when not writing lab reports. LabWrite facilitated this process by stepping students through the scientific process and the process of scientific writing. Log in to add this item to your schedule
